Based on the initiative of the Heads of Governments of Romania and Austria, during the meeting in June 2009, the European Council has initiated the European Commission to develop the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region.
The member states of the EU, European Parliament, Committee of Regions, and the European Commission are working intensively to develop a new Strategy, which was presented by the European Commission at the end of December 2010, and will be adopted by the European Council in the first half of 2011, under the chairmanship of the Republic of Hungary.
The Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at their 131 session, dated 26.08.2010, has adopted the Non Paper “EU Strategy for the Danube Region – Priorities and Contributions of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Danube Region”, based on the proposal of the BiH MFA. Also, Mr. Branimir Mandić, Assistant Minister for the Multilateral Relations of the BiH MFA, was appointed by the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina as the National Coordinator for the EU Strategy for the Danube Region.
The Priorities and Contributions of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region are those projects, which are of high importance for sustainable development of the Sava River Basin. Bosnia and Herzegovina performs its participation in the EU Strategy for the Danube Region only through the Sava River Basin Commission, which is composed of BiH, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. By this, the objective is to implement existing projects that are of great importance for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Several meetings, including two Summits, have been conducted on this subject. At the first Summit, held in Budapest on 25.-26.02.2010, the Danube Declaration has been adopted, and at the Summit held in Bucharest on 08.11.2010, a political Declaration was adopted by acclamation, based on the initiative of the EU member states representatives who belong to the Danube Region.
Radio Television of Vojvodina and the Sodalitas Foundation organized the Constitutional Conference of the Danube Media Network that took place in Novi Sad on 28-30.10.2010. At the Constitutional Conference, the Declaration was signed and the Danube Media Network officials have been selected.
